Community Mosaic Mural
Last summer, the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery was granted funding by the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund, as well as Uptown Waterloo, to create a community mosaic mural along the Waterloop/Laurel trail. This mosaic is situated at the left side of the CC&GG building directly next to the path leading to Waterloo Park.
The CC&GG organized a meeting with mosaic artist Susan Day to help us create a plan for how this mural would come together. It was decided that the mosaic would be made with repurposed, broken pieces of ceramic, glass and enamel art – as well as tiles made by members of the community. From the beginning, each stage of the mural’s development was overseen by ceramic artist Eekta Trienekens, and glass artist Kat Looby. From this, a series of community-driven programs and volunteer opportunities emerged. Events such as Lumen and Winterloo allowed us to invite folks from all over to make a tile to be included in the mural.
Seeing the community come together to make this mosaic possible was a truly wonderful experience. Each tile and piece of this mosaic represents a different hand collaborating to create something bigger. We are immensely grateful to Eekta, Kat, Susan, and all of our volunteers who gathered to help create this work of art. We’re thankful for our community, who joined us to give a piece of themselves and their stories to this display. We’re also grateful for the support of the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund, and Uptown Waterloo. We hope that this mosaic mural stands as a testament to this Region’s strength, positivity and beauty. Thank you for helping us make this happen.
We hope you’ll stop by soon and have a look!
